What is Plaid Friday you may ask, other than a day for me to bust out my plaid shoes?
It's a shop local campaign started by a group of businesses in Oakland CA to celebrate "the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the fun and enjoyable alternative to the big box store "Black Friday", and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays."
What captured my attention were the words diversity and creativity. This is what makes independent businesses so special. We're not cookie cutter carbon copies of one another, flower shops being a great example of that. You want carnations, babies' breath, and red roses - there's a shop for that. You want ginger, banksia, and orchids - there's a shop for that - yes, Sprout!
And to my mind, just as important as the variety of wares we all carry, is the physical presence we have on your cities' and towns' streets. Do you like the way those small businesses make your town look, the charm and atmosphere those businesses add? Or do you prefer your main road to be one endless shopping plaza filled with one national big box store after another?
It's your choice.
Where you choose to shop today, and every day, is what decides the character of your city or town.
So come out in support of the little guys, show them that their presence matters.
