Valentine's Day 2009

I've been trying to get the early buzz on how Valentine's Day is going to go this year, what with the down economy and it falling on a Saturday.

Saturday is just about the worst day of the week for it to fall on as far as florists go, since lovers don't go for delivery at home like the way they do for delivery at work where they get the "bonus points" of remembering the holiday in front of coworkers! Plus, there are more options for celebrating the holiday when it falls on the weekend and people have more time for one another. And this year it falls on the first day of school vacation week, when folks go away, double whammy.

The word in the flower market and the wholesale forums is that wholesalers are going to buy v-e-r-y cautiously, prebooking only 60% of what they would normally and winging the rest. My vendors have said flat out that they will not be stocking much in roses or expensive tropicals (like the anthurium above).

What does this mean to you, the consumer? Get your order in early, especially if you have something specific in mind. I need to have my flower orders in by February 5th to have any hope of getting what I want. You should do the same.

You may also want to consider taking delivery for February 12 or 13. They will be exactly the same flowers everyone else will be getting on the 14th, so not only will they be fresher, and enjoyed for longer, but you will also be praised for not being able to wait to show your love!
